What's your real monthly AI bill?

Two questions, one tool: what do you actually pay across every AI subscription and API, and is each plan worth it versus what your usage would cost at pay-as-you-go rates? No signup, nothing leaves your browser.

2. Is your plan actually worth it?

Estimate what your usage would cost at pay-as-you-go API rates, then compare it to your flat subscription. This is the number you can't easily work out yourself.

At 50 turns/day your usage would cost more on the API, so the flat plan pays off.

This is an estimate. Tokens 4 Breakfast shows your actualusage against your plan's limits — live, in your Mac menu bar — so you know if you're over- or under-using it without guessing.

Why your AI bill is bigger than you think

AI spend creeps up in two directions at once. Subscriptions are easy to forget because they are charged silently every month — Claude Pro or Max, ChatGPT Plus or Pro, Cursor, Copilot, maybe a Gemini or Perplexity plan on top. API usage moves the other way: it is invisible until the invoice lands. Add a couple of subscriptions to some pay-as-you-go usage and the true total is routinely two to three times what people guess.

A one-time number versus a live one

This calculator gives you a snapshot. The problem with snapshots is that plans change, you add a tool mid-month, and usage drifts. Tokens 4 Breakfast keeps the same total live in your Mac menu bar — subscriptions plus real token usage across eight providers — so you see the number before the month ends, not after. It runs locally, needs no account, and is free for one provider.

AI cost questions, answered

How much does Claude Max cost?

Claude Pro is $20/month. Claude Max comes in two tiers: Max 5× at $100/month and Max 20× at $200/month, each raising how much you can use before the 5-hour and weekly limits stop you. API access is billed separately, per token.

Is Claude Max worth it?

It depends on usage. As a rule of thumb, Max 5× starts to beat API rates somewhere around 50 agentic Claude Code turns a day; with Opus-heavy work the math tips much faster. Use the estimator above with your own numbers, or read the full break-even breakdown.

Is ChatGPT Plus cheaper than the API?

For steady interactive use, the $20 flat plan is usually cheaper than paying per token, because every message re-sends context that adds up quickly on the API. For light or bursty use, pay-as-you-go can win. The estimator shows the crossover for your usage.

How do I calculate my total monthly AI spend?

Add every flat subscription (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Copilot, Gemini) to your variable API usage. The first section above does this for you. The number is almost always higher than people guess because subscriptions are charged silently and API spend is invisible until the invoice.
